English Heritage has a wide variety of fascinating objects in its collections. Some are priceless works of art such as Vermeer's 'Guitar Player', fabulous jewels such as the diamond ring in the Wernher Collection, or opulent pieces of furniture such as the Chiswick tables. However, many others are treasures because of their unique survival or historical importance, including such interesting items as the Roman game board and dice from Hadrian's Wall, Darwin's notebook revealing his famous theory of evolution, and even a nuclear bomb recognition unit. One hundred treasures have been selected from sites all over England for inclusion in this book, and are illustrated with sumptuous colour photographs and brief descriptions compiled by experts. This is a cornucopia of beautiful and unusual items from prehistory to modern times - a true treasure trove of the wonderful items in the care of England.
