Coming to America to make a better life has long been a dream of many from around the world. In the past, immigration was easier, but not so any longer. Now, many foreign nationals must be smuggled into the U.S. in order to gain entry. In addition, various criminal groups from around the world traffic people against their will to the U.S. for the purposes of sexual exploitation, slavery, and other underground illicit purposes. The problem is especially dangerous for vulnerable groups like women and children from poor nations. This book examines how human smuggling and trafficking activities are carried out and explores the legal and policy challenges in dealing with these problems. The author covers the scope and patterns of global human trafficking and smuggling activities; major smuggling methods and routes; the human smuggling trade; the involvement of organised criminal organisations in transnational human smuggling activities; and challenges confronting governments in combating these activities. This book focuses on the illicit venues and strategies employed by groups of entrepreneurs as well as criminal organisations in gaining entry into the U.S. and the distribution of their activities (e. g., illegal immigration, the sex trade, and the slave trade).
