After his adventures in Dead Letters, Detective Inspector Best is despatched to Newcastle on behalf of Scotland Yard, to assist with a case that will involve spiritualism, the white slave trade and the shopworkers of Bainbridges, the world's first department store. The difficulties of dealing with another police force, and his complex relationship with Helen, are just some of the problems that Best will encounter.
