I suspect this is Tom Hanks' attempt to channel his uncommon love for the collecting of uncommon typewriters into some trite stories with extinguished flairs

tom hanks 还是去拍电影吧，故事讲的一点都不好看。描写一个女人，除了说点她爱吃什么，身材怎么样，其他就没有话了。

I was expecting some clever stories with typewriters, BUT he just crammed it in, you just can’t believe someone would be writing stories more mundane than this, you can tell he made effort to bring sparkles but ended up soundless every time. Unfinished, I could bear it no longer.

Mr. Hanks definitely shows a good chunk of promise in being a writer. Some of the stories are very interesting. If he publishes another collection of short stories, I would definitely read it. But if he writes a long novel, I wouldn't be so sure if he is there yet.
