将生物演化史和科学史交织在一起，表现人类对地球环境的改造，也描绘出人类追溯气候与环境变迁、五大灭绝来龙去脉的努力。科尔伯特的写作特别在她对全球各地科研人员研究生物环境、气候变迁的过程与自身体验的叙述；字里行间一个竭尽智慧的物种正在利用文明的成果努力预测（如果无法逆转）自己的灭绝。

可以从作品中看到这确实是一位很有实力并且经验丰富的作家，文笔生动，理论也很扎实，并且书后面很清晰列出了各种各样非常厚实的reference list。（生词也很多，读到2/3已经没有耐心查字典了…）在探讨人类、环境和其他生物的关系时也是非常理性和克制的，不会抨击自己不认同的观点，在探讨的时候就是单纯探讨，没有想要通过作品的影响力去达到私人目的，这是让我觉得很敬佩的地方。

写的不错，不是简单的treehugger的宣传，很多确凿的科学数据，却用散文一样的语言来讲解，于是像小说一样引人入胜。
