In the fourteenth century, Europe was a place ravaged by the effects of war and famine and then devastated by the Black Death. These multiple crises lead to a widespread mystical religiosity, which emphasised both ecstatic joy and extreme suffering. 著者簡介

桑德拉·巴拉利（Sandra Baragli），佛羅倫薩大學哲學與文學係畢業，主攻中世紀美術史研究。在1996年獲得由Cologni藝術大師基金會設立的畢業奬學金，其畢業論文的主題為中世紀的建築和聖像畫研究。曾在《中世紀》《藝術風格》等專業期刊發錶論文若乾。
