Written some time between 1132 and 1152, Hugh of Fouilloys Aviary is an appealing treatise designed as a teaching text for monastic pupils. It comprises simple moralizing descriptions of birds appearance and behavioural traits, often based on biblical passages where the different species are mentioned. This volume presents a critical edition of the Latin text, with a facing English translation, an extensive introduction and more than 100 illustrations from some of the many manuscripts of the work.
