This volume is a new addition to the Routledge series of biographical dictionaries. With almost six hundred individually-signed entries from a global team of contributors, the Biographical Dictionary of Social and Cultural Anthropology is destined to become the definitive one-stop reference source for authoritative information on the life and work of the key figures - both historical and contemporary - in the field of anthropology. The primary focus of the Dictionary is on social and cultural anthropology. However, given the history of shared intellectual influences and concerns between sociocultural anthropology and sociolinguistics, figures from both fields have been included. The entries selected reflect the historical predominance of key centres of production in the United States and Britain, yet an effort has also been made to highlight the significant work of anthropologists working in other hubs of scholarly production and in other languages. Finally, the work of anthropologists who have made a substantial contribution to the institutional development of the discipline has also been examined. The timeframe for the Dictionary spans the period from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries and provides a vital guide to the historical record of social and cultural anthropology.
