The action takes place in late August 1833 at a hedge-school in the townland of Baile Beag, an Irish-speaking community in County Donegal. In a nearby field camps a recently arrived detachment of the Royal Engineers, making the first Ordnance Survey. 看到一个说法很妙：这是爱尔兰版语言壁垒的罗朱。可以看得出爱尔兰一贯的民族主义在北爱动荡的30年纷争下回归殖民地语境再度探讨语言和文化的关系更有政治苦痛的意味。语言的奴役是最强大的奴役，思想征服意在抹杀所有鲜明的民族特性。但是剧中黑白暧昧的人物关系也在提醒着人们跳出没完没了的二元对立思维。friel不是爱尔兰契诃夫倒像是爱尔兰易卜生。He tried his best. 但是to remember everything is a form of madness 真的不是一种阿Q式的心酸掩饰吗?
