Mourning the loss of core illusions and the capacity to tolerate disillusion are acute issues in the treatment of a broad spectrum of patients. The author of this book states that it is both inevitable and desirable that early illusions are reactivated and dismantled in therapy, and describes the therapist's handling of the resulting disillusion and mourning. He also demonstrates how these issues of illusion and disillusion are explored and resolved in the treatment, resulting in the patient's realistic acceptance of life's limitations. The patient's and/or therapist's idealization of the psychotherapeutic process is considered within this context, and the hope for an idealized "cure" dispelled.
