史学不讲理论。这本史学书籍谈理论还不错。史学包括知识论、方法论和意识形态（但用于其他学科似乎也成立）。第三章尤其好，寥寥数页结合历史事件概括了西方数千年思想史（从对客观的追求和深信不疑到后现代对启蒙和真的幻灭），极见功力。还讨论了同情式理解、因果、历史是科学还是艺术等问题。

早两年看这本书的话，我可能会十分困惑，同面对哲学的怀疑主义一样，一不小心就掉入了虚无主义的深渊。在发现什么都不确定的事实之后，变得痛苦又沮丧。两年之后再来看才发现真正的信息被我彻底遗漏，不确定性打破的只是幻想的梦“镜”，自身的价值不是毁灭而是机会。这是一个能带来无数可能的机会，一个能重新无数次发问的机会。从现代主义到后现代主义，曾经的“中心”被推翻再推翻；人们对待真相的态度也变成怀疑更怀疑。在破碎又强大的后现代语境中，绝对怀疑除了最初带来的惊愕，已经失去了力量和价值。我想，不管是罗素的《哲学的问题》还是Keith的Rethinking History，其实都在说一件事：“追求一个，有且只有一个的真相是看不到落日的长征。在这个时代，不确定性或许是个福音，给每个可能带来了话语。所以大胆地质问吧！

觉得Routledge这个英国书局也有点偏袒本国人，这本书内容固然还不错（对史学的很多看法我非常同意），但Jenkins的水平总体来说是不和这套丛书的其他作者Jung、Bourdieu、Freud等在一个档次的，估计Yates也是。
