For nearly three centuries, Russia vied with the Crimean Khanate, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire for mastery of Ukraine and the fertile steppes above the Black Sea, a region of great strategic and economic importance - arguably the pivot of Eurasia at the time. The long campaign for it took a great toll upon Russia's population, economy and institutions, and repeatedly frustrated or redefined Russian military and diplomatic projects in the West. The struggle was every bit as important as Russia's wars in northern and central Europe for driving the Russian state-building process, forcing military reform and shaping Russia's visions of Empire.

早期近代黑海北岸的邊疆史，俄，波，剋裏米亞三國演義，相比三國各自的國彆史算是很拓寬視野瞭。不足在於，這本書太偏重俄國史料瞭，對波蘭和剋裏米亞缺乏深入，雖然一定程度上凸顯瞭剋裏米亞相對於奧斯曼的的獨立性，但缺乏一個曆時變化的探討。當然，從學術史上這無可厚非，對剋裏米亞的研究也就最近幾年纔大大深入。
