著者簡介

Lawrence Wright (born August 2, 1947) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American author, screenwriter, staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, and fellow at the Center for Law and Security at the New York University School of Law. He is a graduate of Tulane University, and for two years taught at the American University in Cairo in Egypt.

對於現代中東曆史和社會變化瞭解不多的讀者，例如我，應該會很喜歡這本書。Lawrence Wright的敘述條理和脈絡清晰，敘事的地方講故事功力老練。解讀瞭中東是如何在二十世紀一步一步走嚮911和恐怖主義。海灣戰爭是起點，伊斯蘭教原教運動和本拉登如何從商人蛻變成“恐怖基地”的控製者是篇幅的重點。雖然我大學念瞭很多中世紀宗教史和伊斯蘭藝術史的課程，但是聽過這本書之後對當代宗教還是有瞭新的認知。最後，每次聽到本拉登的老婆們還有女兒們的命運和生活，都特彆慶幸自己齣生在紅旗飄飄的無神論國傢裏。

對伊斯蘭教激進主義的發展寫得很詳細。對海灣戰爭一筆帶過，literally 一筆帶過。覺得少瞭三分之一的背景分析。是美國人寫的原因？

舊書攤上五塊錢淘來的，斷斷續續看瞭兩個月。。不瞭解伊斯蘭聖戰的人也沒法真正拿這本書裝逼。。也就看個大概。。但是看到曆史如此縝密還是會覺得異常恐懼。。Wherever you are, death will find you, Even in the looming tower.
