Software has replaced a diverse array of physical, mechanical, and electronic technologies used before 21st century to create, store, distribute and interact with cultural artifacts. It has become our interface to the world, to others, to our memory and our imagination - a universal language through which the world speaks, and a universal engine on which the world runs. What happens to the idea of a 'medium' after previously media-specific tools have been simulated and extended in software? Is it still meaningful to talk about different mediums at all? Lev Manovich answers these questions and supports his theoretical arguments by detailed analysis of key media applications such as Photoshop and After Effects, popular web services such as Google Earth, and the projects in motion graphics, interactive environments, graphic design and architecture. Software Takes Command is a must for all practicing designers and media artists and scholars concerned with contemporary media.
Lev Manovich is the author of Soft Cinema: Navigating the Database (2005), and The Language of New Media (2001) which was described as "the most suggestive and broad ranging media history since Marshall McLuhan." Manovich is a Professor at CUNY Graduate Center, a Director of the Software Studies Initiative at California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, and a Visiting Professor at European Graduate School.
睡不著過瞭一遍Manovich 2013年的這本小冊子。基本延續的是他注重digital技術的思路,這也是現在學界主流的觀點,把new media art用digital art這個名詞替代,而且Manovich覺得沒有所謂的new media art,有的隻是new softwares applying to art. 主體部分基本延續著對software的研究。結論裏8條對medium性質的歸納也適用社交媒體,這也是我在綜述裏的一個主張:medium的單數(digital)和復數media(social networks)需要同時納入到關於新媒體的理論裏,我覺得這是目前英語文獻沒有考慮全的一點。另外結尾還提到software epistemology的問題,也是個和媒介考古學接軌的新東西

評分雖然有點技術決定論,但提齣的“deep remixability”確實比單一的MSA要有推進,“元媒介”提供瞭一個整體生態的視角。但是馬諾維奇沒有考慮技術也是社會機製的産物,“物質背後”又是一條銜尾蛇。
