One of James Purdy's best novels: abortion, incest, homosexuality, male love and beauty, violent deaths compete with one another for the reader's attention, and poetry, embodied by Eustace Chisholm, has to claim its own soul in a world that has become indifferent to its rarefied existence. The book occupies a permanent place in my house of memory.
