muteness envy; wartime homosociality vs. biological reproduction; jouissance beyond the pleasure principle... 常見的returning soldier的題材，勞倫斯寫得一波三摺；原本戰爭纔是例外狀態，男性的迴歸卻指涉戰時如March和Banford一般的女性間關係的abnormality，March和Henry主奴辯證法般的關係在最後的爆發後反而變得撲朔迷離：“The awful mistake of happiness.”
