James Fenimore Cooper (l789-1851)

小說傢。1789年9月15日生於新澤西州的伯靈頓。2歲時，全傢遷移至紐約州的庫珀斯敦。附近的湖泊森林以及有關印第安人的傳說，都深深吸引著他。1806年到商船上學習航海，後在安大略湖畔一海軍基地參加造船工作，曾被任為海軍上尉。1811年辭去海軍職務，同一個地主的女兒結婚，定居在庫珀斯敦。31歲時開始寫小說。第1部小說《戒備》於1820年自費齣版，很不成功。在妻子鼓勵下，他改變方嚮，寫瞭一部他認為“應當是純粹美國式的以愛國為主題的書”，即《間諜》。小說在1821年齣版後受到歡迎。以後又寫瞭反映邊疆生活的《拓荒者》(1823)和反映航海生活的《舵手》(1824)，在美國文學史上開創瞭3種不同類型的小說，即革命曆史小說《間諜》、邊疆冒險小說《拓荒者》和海上冒險小說《舵手》。

1826年齣任美國駐法國裏昂的領事，並到意大利和英國旅行。除瞭寫海上冒險小說之外，還寫瞭反映歐洲生活的三部麯：《刺客》(1831)、《黑衣教土》(1832)和《劊子手》(1833)，錶現教權和封建勢力在資本主義興起之前已日趨腐朽和衰落。

1835年迴國後寫的小說《歸途》和《傢鄉麵貌》(1838)不僅諷刺瞭美國社會，還諷刺瞭庫珀斯敦的一些人物的僞善和愚意，因此而受到輿論攻擊。晚年他甚至支持美國對墨西哥的侵略戰爭。1851年9月14日去世。

庫珀在30年創作生涯中寫瞭50多部小說和其他著作。他最有成就的作品，如《皮襪子故事集》五部麯，對美國的西部小說産生很大影響。至今仍擁有不少讀者。
