Book Description
The term, "Irish" can be applied to a host of musical forms, from ancient harp music played by highly prized medieval bards to contemporary stadium rock and the Riverdance phenomenon. Perhaps the most exceptional aspect of the music that flows from the Emerald Isle is its versatility and its influence on diverse genres across the globe. Wherever it is found though, and in whatever form, the music of Ireland inspires in its listeners a passion that is rarely found in other forms.
Music, Songs and Instruments of Ireland traces the history of traditional Irish music, from its roots in the mists of Celtic culture to the present day. Illustrated with over a hundred photographs and illustrations it documents the evolution of each instrument as well as accounting for many of the most famous players and enthusiasts who have shaped and preserved this uniquely emotive music, infused as it is with the soul, talent, and often tragic history of this beautiful island. The story of Irish music-sometimes glorious, often troubled--sheds light on how present-day traditional music has emerged. While much of what has gone before remains a mystery, and always will, what remains to us is probably the most human, most varied, most poetical music in the world.
From Book News Annotation
"The music of Ireland inspires in its listeners a passion that is rarely found in other forms." After pronouncing this truism, former Fleet Street journalist Farrington presents a thorough, if non- scholarly history of the varied forms of traditional Irish music, as well as the instruments involved, and noted performers and music preservers. She covers a lot of ground, including some Irish political history, Irish music's influence on contemporary music, and its current world-wide popularity as proven by "Riverdance." The book is definitely aimed at the novice, but admirably detailed. Includes many color photos (at least one of which is wrongly captioned, and many of which are of negligible value). Annual music festivals are listed by month. No index or references. Oversize: 9x12". Annotation c.
