She is intrigued by the Nawab's charm and aggressive courtship, and soon begins to spend most of her days in his company. But then she becomes pregnant, and unsure of the child's paternity, she is faced with a wrenching dilemma. Her reaction to the crisis humiliates her husband and outrages the British community, breeding a scandal that lives in collective memory long after her death.

著者简介

露丝•普拉瓦尔•杰哈布瓦拉(Ruth Prawer Jhabvala)，1927-2013，英国女性小说家，好莱坞著名编剧，1927年生于德国科隆，12岁时移居英国，1948年加入英国国籍，1951年迁居印度，1975年移居美国纽约。由其任编剧的《看得见风景的房间》和《霍华兹别墅》双双获得奥斯卡金像奖，另著有《她愿跟从谁》《激情的本质》等。《热与尘》一书是其代表做，荣获了1975年的英国文学最高奖项布克奖。
