ROLAND BARTHES was born in 1915 and studied French literature and classics at the University of Paris. After teaching French at universities in Romania and Egypt, he joined the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique, where he devoted himself to research in sociology and lexicology. He was a professor at the colege de France until his death in 1980.

I've been reading this book for hours and don't understand a thing yet... A textbook for my contemporary film theory class at the U of Iowa. A collection of Roland Barthes' most influential essays translated into English.

第一部分是可视对象的书写，我自己读得比较high的地方是对于“动作”（他还是沿用古希腊的drama“动作”这层含义喔！）、“艺术”和“身体”的“书写”~前面的关于摄影的和纯符号的部分我是拿来辅助阅读《符号学原理》和《今日神话的》。但是有些地方根本读不通，囫囵过去了。

羅蘭巴特在這本書中提出了一個著名的口號：“作者已死”。在他以及很多解構主義擁躉看來，理應為文本附加意義的，是文本的閱讀者而非創造者。這觀點和文學理論中“文本開敞性”相似，都在相當大地程度上否認作者對文本的解釋權，而給予後來的閱讀者相當大的參與討論和決策權。...

除了收录了最有名的“作家之死”，罗兰巴特重读拉康signifier和自己的学生兼同事Kristeva的signifiance的文章短小精悍，the obtuse meaning和the Text的概念非常适合用来重新解读诗歌，他的解读有助于理解Kristeva的semiotic. 如巴特所说，language is always vague and conflicting. 而作为学者和老师，我们其实应该是可以发现floating, suspensions, layers of meanings in language而不是将自己假设为权威或者是one meaning的卫道士。The teacher is not the analyst but the analyzed.
