Both works show James's mastery of the short story and his genius for creating haunting atmosphere and unbearable tension.

Anthony Curtis's wide-ranging introduction traces the development of the two stories from initial inspiration to finished work and examines their critical reception.

著者簡介

Henry James (1843-1916) was born in New York City. In 1865, he began writing reviews and stories for American journals. 1875 found him settled in Paris, then London, where he was very popular in society. He became a British citizen in 1915. He was a highly prolific writer of novels, short stories, and letters.

這情節讓人想起Polanski的The Ninth Gate，同樣有點齣賣靈魂的意味，未用神鬼幫襯營造神秘感，疏可以走馬密不容藏針的心理分析作傢Henry James當然棋高一著。故事發生在威尼斯，這場步步為營的利益製衡色調變換微妙光影開閤交織，如Giorgione的畫靜謐前景更顯襯齣背後風雲瞬變的危機。阿斯彭文稿是否存在，操縱者將信仰變迷宮，讀到最後一陣冷汗。Juliana從頭到尾給我Kristin Scott Thomas這種棱角美人的即視感，可惜書裏設定是個垂暮老人。

兩篇故事都有夠詭異，James貌似很擅長塑造那種有些神經兮兮的女性角色……

The Aspern Papers，这一篇比the turn of the screw好读的多，简直好读太多了，果然亨利詹姆斯的文字是越到后期越晦涩，虽然在我看来，“晦涩”在另一方面反而证明了作者的“精确”，因为他将各种细微的心理的波动，各种细腻的感觉都呈现出来了，这一点在the beast in the jung...
