比起Routledge的那本指南，Oxford的这本更为关注理论的前沿，所有的文章都是从一个具体的问题切入展开研究，并在这种研究的过程中顺便展现出基本概念的定义和现象学的研究方式。除了涉及意识、身体、交互主体性等传统话题之外，一些文章还关注了现象学与自然主义的关系、现象学对艺术和宗教研究的启示；对胡塞尔的阐释针锋相对的两个派别均有文章收入。其中，Drummond批判表象主义的文章拓展了表象主义的定义，从而将其当代修正包括进来，说明即便这些修正也仍然预设了独立于经验的真实，因而仍旧存在表象主义的困难。Brough的文章出色地处理了图像意识的特殊性问题，借助胡塞尔的三分法，突出了图像意识与原初知觉的区别。Murata的文章试图处理声音和颜色的空间性问题，区分了“表面色”和“影片色”，比较有新意。
