晚期中世纪英国经济社会史新论，传统观点认为贵族是暴饮暴食，农民挨饿，实际情况是大多数贵族受制于领地减少以及基督教戒暴食的规定，饮食很克制；黑死病导致的人口锐减以及生产技术的进步，农民有更多的肉吃，估计农民一天的营养为2000卡路里。农民的住房面积看起来是相对宽敞的，据估计，人均居住面积超过200平方英尺的情况并不少见，对于一般家庭而言，人均居住面积在70-90平方英尺的情况更为普遍。这样的人均居住面积超过中世纪的南欧，也超过现代的一些第三世界国家。另作者认为，农民的衣服并非由最便宜的材料制成，农民用于长袍的毛纺衣料每码价值8便士到1先令3便士，与某些乡绅家庭使用的衣料质量没有多大区别，老神父感叹农民近几年来穿的衣服越来越贵了。晚期中世纪英国能取得这样的成绩，足以证明工业革命的出现并不是偶然的
