William Stoner is born at the end of the nineteenth century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar’s life, so different from the hardscrabble existence he has known.

著者简介

John Williams was born on August 29, 1922 in Clarksville, Texas. He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 in China, Burma and India. The Swallow Press published his first novel, Nothing But the Night, in 1948, as well as his first book of poems, The Broken Landscape, in 1949. Macmillan published Williams' second novel, Butcher's Crossing, in 1960. After recieving his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Denver, and his Ph.D from the University of Missouri, Williams returned in 1954 to the University of Denver where he taught literature and the craft of writing for thirty years. In 1963 Williams received a fellowship to study at Oxford University where where he received a Rockefeller grant enabling him to travel and research in Italy for his last novel, Augustus, published in 1972. John Williams died in Arkansas on March 4, 1994.

A rich, sombre, finely hewn novel that is admirably simple, for tackling life's true sadness with transcedent serenity and existential wit, for seeing life whole without delusion or despair. With a pellucid and reticent prose, it addresses life's inevitable mediocrity and obscurity, while evokes passion and purity in seeking an adequate existence.

看完这本书，写了短短一句感慨：好像怎样都过不好人生。斯通纳的一生真是太普通了，普通得可以穿越时代找到无数同类人。读到后40%，斯通纳的空虚与绝望唤起我心中很大的共鸣。太熟悉了。那种静静的看着虚空找不到生存的意义的绝望。斯通纳勤恳，单纯，逆来顺受，都是他人生遗憾的原因。单纯的勤恳让他终生留在校园里却以副教授的职位结束了职业生涯，没有荣誉，没有建树。可能本来可以有的，他却在lomax的压迫中浪费了太多时间。他的逆来顺受简直是致命的弱点，也提醒了我，真正想要的还是要放手一搏的，有时候不是为了得到什么具体的东西，而是为了生命本身的尊严。他的逆来顺受不仅糟践了自己的人生，更放弃了作为父亲的责任而间接毁了女儿的一生。他的逆来顺受也让Katherine轰轰烈烈的爱潦草收场。人生，真不是那么容易。

无法代入的人生，却是完全可代入的情感。不知不觉就过了一辈子，不只是最终，而是始终孑然一身。感慨家庭对一个人的影响，莫名其妙就引导了人的一生，这一点不是从Stoner身上，而是从他篇幅不多的女儿身上看到的。那一刻，觉得可怕。虽然是完全不同的境遇，也没有起伏大悲的情节，还是会在最后看到流泪。

Stoner's heroism is delicately intertwined with his bitter failures, it is a secret power that makes him invulnerable. After all, he has achieved everything he truly treasured throughout his life. Yes, that power is his ever-lasting desire and never-dying awe towards beauty, knowledge and love itself.
